A practice site for Nitpick. Everything here is made up, and a few small things are wrong on purpose.

Brine & Dandy

Corner of Vinegar Hill & Mill, Larchmont Falls

Pickled with patience. Piled on rye.

A pickle shop with a sandwich counter, or the other way round depending on who you ask. Everything is brined in the back, in crocks older than the building.

Garlic Dillno. 7, extra garlicky

Take a jar home

Pint jars, sealed the morning they leave. Bring the empty back and we knock a dollar off the next one.

Garlic Dill no. 7Loud, sour, crunchy. The original.$9
Bread & ButterSweet, a bit of turmeric, very polite.$9
Fire SpearsHabanero and garlic. Sign the waiver.$10

Grandma Ruth’s crock

Dot Brennan opened Brine & Dandy in 2011 with two hundred dollars, one borrowed slicer and her grandmother’s five-gallon crock. The crock is still in the back. So is the recipe, written on the inside of a cereal box.

We ferment slowly, salt by weight, and never add vinegar to a pickle that did not ask for it. It takes longer. You can taste that it takes longer.
